At ACT for Youth we are interested in building resources for those working with bisexual youth. If you have links and resources to share on this topic, let us know! E-mail Karen Schantz at ks548@cornell.edu, or post your resources on the bisexual thread on the ACT for Youth Forum.

Where to Start

  • Definitions and issues related to bisexuality: While the focus is on HIV/STI prevention, this report from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Fenway Institute, and BiNet USA also offers a good introduction to current thinking about bisexuality. The lengthy report includes definitions, a literature review, and an executive summary that highlights issues of special concern for health care providers. See also the discussion of issues facing bisexual youth (p.29 – 31): Bisexual Health.

Research

  • Bisexuality Research: For the first professional quarterly to publish both professional articles and serious essays on bisexuality and its meaning for the individual, the community, and society, see The Journal of Bisexuality.

Personal Voices

  • International anthology: Robin Ochs and Sarah E. Rowley edited an anthology of personal writings on bisexuality entitled Getting Bi.

  • Bisexual label: Speaker, writer, and activist Robin Ochs offers voices from an informal survey of women who reject the bisexual label although they have had attractions to both men and women, Don’t Put Me in a Box.

Health Care

  • Sexual Health: Model practices for HIV and STI prevention programming are included in this report from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Fenway Institute, and BiNet USA: Bisexual Health.

Bisexuality and Human Rights

  • Sexual Rights are Human Rights: On March 26, 2007, a groundbreaking set of principles on sexual orientation, gender identity, and international law was launched by a group of 29 international human rights experts. Addressing a broad range of human rights standards and their application to issues of sex and gender, they are known as the Yogyakarta Principles.

  • Homeless Youth: The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force reports on homelessness and LGBT youth (registration required for download), including a fact sheet specific to New York.
